My wife has multiple sclerosis and her condition is deteriorating. I am providing more and more care for her as a result. I know I am not allowed to claim the caregiver amount as her spouse. Are there any other credits I can claim?

I am sorry about your wife’s health. Starting in 2012, you should be eligible to claim the new $2,000 Family Caregiver Credit which translates into about $300 in tax savings. The credit is meant to help provide a supplement to people who are caring for ailing relatives, spouses or children. Your wife should also qualify for the Disability Tax Credit because of her condition. If she hasn’t claimed it before, her doctor should complete a T2201 Disability Tax Credit Certificate and send it the Canada Revenue Agency for approval. Once approved, if she cannot claim the entire Disability Tax Credit amount, she can transfer the unused portion to you.
